MID-CENTURY TO NEXT CENTURY

A tabletop book created by the Salk Communications Office celebrating sixty years of science, art, and culture at the architectural masterwork and innovative scientific research institute in La Jolla, CA.

What began as a spiral notebook…

We didn’t set out to create a coffee table book documenting 60 years of Salk Institute science, history, and programs. What began as a simple spiral notebook summarizing efforts to preserve and protect the Salk Institute’s iconic and historical architecture didn't seem to do justice to the topic. We realized quickly that it was an opportunity to tell a larger story, one that included the important history behind the Salk Institute, the creative partnership between Jonas Salk and Louis Kahn in creating the landmark buildings considered masterworks of mid-century architecture, and to celebrate the sixty years of bold science flowing from the labs which sit atop the cliffs of the majestic Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, CA. Mid-Century to Next Century was a labor of love involving a creative professional team that took more than three years to complete. Ultimately, it successfully showcases the architectural beauty of the building, the Institute’s history, and the brilliance of the science underway on the stunning campus in honor of the Institute’s 60th Anniversary.
